Spring Break Post

This week's recording was all about the stress in the individual words.
Identifying the word stress was very easy in comparison to identifying the thought groups. German does not have a fixed stress pattern unlike Spanish, for example; however with a little bit of experience in it, it is easy to feel or to guess where the stress should be. But beware of the words that look very similar to the English ones – usually they have a different stress, even though the spelling in some cases is the same/ almost the same (situAtion - Engl: SituatION - Germ).After listening more carefully to this speech I realized that all compound words have several stressed syllables. The bottom line, even though the word can consist of several roots, it does not change the stress in each individual morpheme. It was probably the most important observation for this week for me.
